After updating my Microsoft Surface Go 2 from FydeOS v22.1 to v23.0, Android confirmation dialogs have become unusable.
System details:
Device: Microsoft Surface Go 2, 8 GB RAM
FydeOS image: surface-go2-io
Current version: FydeOS v23.0
Current build: 16700.56.23.9
Previously working version: FydeOS v22.1, build 16503.20.22.7
Android SDK: 33
Type Cover attached
The problem:
Android dialogs appear normally, but buttons such as CANCEL, UPDATE and other confirmation options cannot be selected with:
Touchpad/mouse
Touchscreen
Keyboard navigation
Clicking a button usually just makes the mouse pointer disappear briefly and then return. Some other controls in the same Android app can still work.
Removing the Type Cover and entering tablet mode occasionally makes a dialog button respond, but this is very unreliable. It has also caused the screen to turn completely black. Reattaching the Type Cover sometimes restores the display, but keyboard detection is also unreliable after this happens.
I can close a frozen installer by right-clicking its FydeOS shelf/taskbar icon and selecting Close. Therefore, FydeOS can still manage the window, but normal input is not being delivered correctly inside it.
Troubleshooting already completed:
Rebooted multiple times.
Confirmed the same applications and dialogs worked under v22.1.
Completely disabled my custom Surface tablet-mode helper and rebooted. This made no difference, so the helper is not causing the problem.
Restored the tablet helper after testing.
Confirmed Android reports the correct display configuration:
Physical size: 1920×1280
Physical density: 256
Rotation: 0
Confirmed there is no incorrect Android size or density override.
Tested Android’s block_untrusted_touches setting. It made no difference and has been restored to its original state.
Tried injecting a tap directly through Android’s standard input tap command. The visible button still did not respond.
uiautomator could not produce a hierarchy containing the visible dialog.
The issue affects multiple Android popups, not just one APK or application.
Normal Play Store installation can work, but confirmation dialogs displayed during other Android installations or updates remain unclickable.
The evidence points to a regression in the FydeOS v23 Surface Go 2 build, involving input delivery between the FydeOS window manager and Android windows. The connection with Type Cover removal/tablet mode may be important.
This has made FydeOS v23 extremely difficult to use on the Surface Go 2. Returning permanently to v22.1 is not a viable long-term solution.
I captured diagnostic information while the faulty dialog was visible. The archive is:
Yes when installing any app with any installer the Pop up that gives you install or cancel is completely unclickable with touchscreen or keyboard, if I switch to tablet mode sometimes it’s clickable but not always. I can close /cancel the install popup from the taskbar I just physically can’t select either of the buttons in the popup
All android apps, the issue is the “install popup” is just unclickable, I can’t do anything at all with the install window apart from close is from the taskbar
Do you mean you can’t click “Install” on the installation screen shown in the video below? If so, we haven’t been able to reproduce the issue—the button works normally in our tests.
neither button is clickable with touchscreen or trackpad, all i can is close it from the taskbar
edit
i can install apps from thr fyde os app store that works but installing apps from the aurora store or from telegram wont install, they are the ones unclickable
This is the issue with this store app not with apk file installing. It’s totally different. When you install apk file, the popup windows is from the system. But when you install from aurora, the popup window is from aurora.
I can reproduce the same problem from Telegram and other Android applications. Aurora is simply one application capable of triggering the affected installer.
The controlled comparison is:
Start an APK installation directly from Aurora Store or Telegram.
FydeOS opens the Android Package Installer confirmation window.
The window appears normally, but Install/Update and Cancel are completely unresponsive to the mouse, touchscreen and keyboard.
However:
Save the same APK to Downloads.
Open it through the FydeOS Files application.
FydeOS uses a different installation interface.
The APK installs successfully.
Applications from the FydeOS App Store also install successfully because they use that working installation route rather than the broken Android Package Installer window.
Therefore:
The APK itself is valid.
Android installation generally works.
Aurora is not the cause, because Telegram and other Android applications trigger the same failure.
The failure occurs specifically when an Android application hands an APK to the Android Package Installer and FydeOS displays its separate confirmation window.
This worked on FydeOS v22.1 and broke immediately after updating the same Surface Go 2 to v23.
Please reproduce this using any Android application that launches an external APK installation, rather than testing only the FydeOS App Store. The issue is with the v23 handling/input routing of that Package Installer window.
Do you mean that when you select “Install” directly in Aurora Store, the confirmation dialog appears, but its buttons don’t respond to clicks? If so, we haven’t been able to reproduce this issue. We tried installing several apps through Aurora Store, and the buttons in the confirmation dialog worked normally each time.
Not just aurora, telegram as well. It’s a different package installation UI that pops up than if I use fydeos app store like a legacy pop-up or something (it gives me the choice between innure package installer or default) which ever I pick gives me a popup unclickable. The fydeos app store doesn’t offer me the choice of installer that’s the big difference
Could you please provide detailed steps to reproduce the issue you’re experiencing?
When we select “Install” in Aurora Store, we can interact with all the pop-ups normally. Reproducing the issue is the first step in investigating and fixing it. So far, we haven’t been able to reproduce it, and we’ll need more details to identify the cause and work on a fix.
Hi,
i think i have the same problem since v23.
The touchscreen feels strange at times, and I got an Android pop-up (to install an APK) but was never able to click on it.
I own a Surface Go 1.
Thank you. We now have another user reporting the same problem on a Surface Go 1, while my affected device is a Surface Go 2. Both began experiencing it after upgrading to FydeOS v23.
This suggests the relevant condition is the Microsoft Surface hardware/build, not Aurora Store itself.
Please reproduce it specifically on a Surface Go 1 or Surface Go 2 running FydeOS v23, preferably with the Type Cover attached.
Exact reproduction steps on my Surface Go 2:
Boot FydeOS v23 in laptop mode with the Type Cover attached.
From an Android application, initiate installation of an APK:
Select Install in Aurora Store; or
Download an APK in Telegram and open it directly from Telegram.
Android’s separate Package Installer window appears with Cancel and Install/Update buttons.
Attempt to select either button using:
Type Cover touchpad
Touchscreen
Keyboard navigation
Neither button responds. With the touchpad, the pointer briefly disappears and then returns.
The frozen installer can still be closed by right-clicking its FydeOS shelf icon and selecting Close.
Control tests:
FydeOS App Store installations work.
If the same APK is saved to Downloads and opened through the FydeOS Files application, it installs using a different FydeOS installation interface and works.
Aurora Store and Telegram both trigger the same broken Android Package Installer window.
The problem did not occur on FydeOS v22.1 on the same Surface Go 2.
Removing the Type Cover and entering tablet mode can occasionally make the button respond, but this is unreliable and has also caused a black screen.
Therefore, successful Aurora testing on unrelated hardware does not rule this out. Aurora is only one way to launch the affected Package Installer window.
The new Surface Go 1 report is independent confirmation that this is likely specific to the FydeOS v23 Surface input/window handling. Please test using Surface hardware and compare the Surface v22.1 and v23 builds.
This should have nothing to do with the device. I installed several APKs on Aurora on my Surface Go 2, and the pop-up windows were all uniform system-like windows, and they could all be tapped normally. They’re different from the pop-up window in your screenshot. It should only be reproducible on certain Android apps.
