Dell Chromebook 11 3120 (“Candy”) – chtmax98090 Sound Not Working on FydeOS v19.0

Hi FydeOS community,

I recently installed FydeOS v19.0 on my Dell Chromebook 11 3120 (codenamed “Candy”), and I’m running into an issue with the internal sound. My system specs are:

  • CPU: Intel Celeron N2840 @ 2.16GHz (2 threads, up to 2.58GHz)
  • RAM: 4GB
  • Storage: 16GB eMMC
  • Graphics: Intel integrated graphics

The problem is that the chtmax98090 audio codec is detected, but both the internal speakers and headphone jack show up as “Dummy Output” in audio settings — no sound comes out. HDMI audio works fine, so it seems specific to the internal sound hardware.

I’ve tried checking alsamixer to ensure volumes aren’t muted and verifying hardware detection via /proc/asound/cards, but I haven’t had any luck. I suspect it might be a kernel or driver compatibility issue.

Has anyone successfully gotten the internal audio working on this model with FydeOS v19.0? Any suggestions, workarounds, or driver patches would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help!

To improve compatibility, we’ve removed some Chromebook-specific optimisations that were integrated into the vanilla ChromiumOS code. Chromebooks often use specialised internal sound cards that require dedicated drivers. For more details, please refer to this document.
