Recommendation for kid chromebook

Sincere apologies for not doing more research, I hope you can help me anyways. I purged Google from my life a few years ago. Now kid’s school is forcing Google Classrooms and Chromebooks down our throats. I now need something that approximates Chromebook for kid’s homework. I don’t want to give them general PC, as they are too young to handle something like that without direct supervision.

I looked at ChromiumOS, but these folks lost their collective minds, I simply do not have time to compile my own build. It looks like FydeOS is the way to go, I am not averse to even paying for patching.

So, I am looking to buy a new device and want to de-Google it as much as possible.

Q1: Is FydeOS with subscription the way to go? Is its UI similar-enough to ChromeOS where teachers/school would likely accept it as “chromebook”?

Q2: Looking at MrChromebox.tech jail breaking a Chromebook all appears to be about the board, but I can’t easily find this info prior to buying. Can someone recommend what to buy to have a hassle free FydeOS install?

Q3: I need to lock down the resulting device to be restricted to school activities only, or kids going to browse YT on it all day. I want to avoid having to police device use by outright preventing non-school use. I would like to avoid fiddling with hosts if possible, are there parental permissions settings on FydeOS?

Thank you!

You should buy a Chromebook.

Honestly, it supports parental controls, but with Google’s Family Link system. And you are trying to use De-Google, so maybe you should find another alternative. Although if you would like restrictions, you can buy a Chromebook, or use a Google account. Using Family Link has some benefits, with screen time limits, website blocking, and specific app blocking. You could block the android subsystem app if you like. But, also, Fydeos with a subscription is not the way to go. If you mean FydeOS for You, if you cancel your plan, you won’t have any access to your computer (based on my experience), but if you use FydeOS for PC, you don’t need to pay, including that you mentioned you don’t need to pay. So if you want parental controls, you might need to switch from De-Google temporarily. You can get a Dell PC if you want a hassle-free installation. Excluding disabling secure boot, everything will be easy.
